Dutch portrait painter Mireille Ligterink came to her uniquely arresting four-tone style unconventionally, through her training in art therapy. The social interaction and emotional vulnerability that portraiture requires comes across in her close-up impressionist acrylic renderings, and also, more unusually, informs her very choice of palette. Formal and expressive considerations guide her process: for each face she chooses four colors that reflect the personality of her subject, while also picking one particularly striking facial feature to emphasize.
The resulting portraits often incorporate vivid hues and surprisingly bold shading reminiscent of prints or illustrations. Ligterink’s canvases focus our vision on a gaze, an eye or a nose. Subjects often stare out at the viewer from the frame, which makes for arresting encounters with strangers who begin to feel familiar. The combination of colors — alert yellows, calm browns, assertive blues — and stylized features makes the portraits very intuitively legible. One quickly gains a sense of Ligterink’s subjects, as if she had introduced them to the viewer in person.
Artist Statement
I like to use my art to unite and empower people, to make small things noticeable and to make the world more beautiful. I have developed a style that is very much my own. My portraits are up-close and personal. In my portraits I only use four colors, which match the personality, plus one background color. I concentrate on the part of the face that is the most striking. This close-up makes the portrait more abstract, more universal. The focus is placed on the strengths and characteristics, making them noticeable. I hope that the overall result adds more beauty to the world.

Mijn werk onderscheidt zich door helderheid in kleur en contrast, duidelijke vormgeving en vaak vrolijke sfeer.
Ik ben me sinds 2006 gaan richten op het werken in projecten. Projecten die ik zelf bedenk, opzet en uitvoer en projecten die ik samen uitwerk met anderen, of waar ik aan deelneem.
Projecten waar kunst voorop staat.
Mijn projecten zijn spraakmakend, positief, en hebben vaak een verbinding met mensen. Ik werk graag voor en met mensen. Ik breng mensen in aanraking met kunst, confronteer ze met mooie, inspirerende dingen. De mens blijft centraal staan, de kunst voor iedereen toegankelijk.

Ik ben Mireille Ligterink, geboren 1971 te Alphen a/d Rijn.
Sinds 1994 ben ik actief als beeldend kunstenaar.

Hierbij wordt gewerkt met een foto als uitgangspunt, een foto die u al heeft of een foto die ik maak.
Een portret in opdracht gaat in volledig overleg met u. U kiest een foto uit en bepaalt de kleuren, het formaat en of u er een lijst omheen wilt hebben. Vanzelfsprekend krijgt u hierbij advies van mij.
